Marvel's Avengers Spider-Man DLC Appears To Have Been Delayed

It looks like we won't be shouting "go web, go" for a while, because the latest rumours suggest the upcoming Marvel's Avengers Spider-Man DLC has been delayed. While Crystal Dynamics' role-playing brawler was supposed to cash in on the success of Insomniac Games' Spider-Man with its very own Marvel Universe of games, fans have been left confused, underwhelmed, and (frankly) a little bored. To clear up any confusion, Marvel's Avengers and its Spider-Man DLC are NOT set in the same world as Insomniac's PlayStation-exclusive Marvel's Spider-Man or Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Presumably hoping to follow in the footsteps of Insomniacs' game, the addition of Web-Head to Crystal Dynamics' game is more than just expanding the roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. One of the game's biggest flaws was that newcomer character Kamala Khana, aka Ms. Marvel, was far more interesting than the tried and tested Avengers line-up of Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Black Widow. Square Enix had hoped to keep the game ticking along nicely with a series of character DLCs - with the introduction of Spider-Man being a big talking point.

Has the Avengers Spider-Man DLC been delayed?

Posting on Twitter, the @PlayAvengers update account for the game claims copies of the game on PS5 originally came with a sticker confirming the Spider-Man DLC for "early 2021". According to the account, the sticker now just has a loose date of 2021. Although this seems like pretty damning proof the Avengers Spider-Man DLC has been delayed, one player claims some copies have always had a sticker that simply says "2021". Ultimately, neither Square Enix nor Crystal Dynamics have responded yet.

In the midst of the global pandemic, it's easy to imagine the Spider-Man DLC being delayed. Added to this, this wouldn't be the first DLC that's been pushed. As players wait for the release of the Hawkeye DLC in March to bring the OG Avenger of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the game, we've already seen his arrival get the push from December, while the second Hawkeye (Kate Bishop) also had her own DLC shifted from its original release date. Hawkeyes are all well and good, but let's be honest, it's Spidey we all want to play as.

What to expect from the Avengers Spider-Man DLC?

Everyone is rightly asking what's on the way with our wall-crawling hero. Given that Peter Parker and his hero alias make him one of the best-loved Marvel characters (even being Stan Lee's favourite), there's a lot riding on it. We've already seen Marvel's Avengers win over critics with Ms. Marvel, but it remains to be seen whether Pete is a young and comedic ally for Kamala or we'll stick with the more mature version from Insomniac's world. If we were Crystal Dynamics, we'd do anything in our power to distance the Avengers Spider-Man DLC from Insomniac's Games. Things are already confusing enough, and back when Marvel's Spider-Man released its remaster, there were even allegations a key line referring to the Avengers was cut because of Marvel's Avengers - it wasn't!

Of course, Spidey is just the tip of a presumed hero iceberg. Following the arrival of Kate Bishop, Clint Barton's DLC will offer the game its next-gen upgrade and a tonne of story-related content that seems to be pulling from the comics and the "Old Man Hawkeye" arc. These two DLCs are fine, but come on, we're all waiting to leap off rooftops as Spider-Man.

As for who comes next, there are whispers Black Panther is on the horizon to honour the late Chadwick Boseman, while Scarlet Witch and Vision are other popular choices following the runaway success of WandaVision. We'll have to wait and see whether the Marvel's Avengers Spider-Man DLC is delayed, but here's hoping we're not stuck in another web of delays.
