Assassin's Creed ‘Set For Massive Next-Gen 2022 Release’

Assassin's Creed ‘Set For Massive Next-Gen 2022 Release’

While our blades are still bloody with the insides of Anglo-Saxons from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ubisoft is apparently looking ahead at what comes next and a new Assassin's Creed game coming in 2022.

Since 2007, the open-world adventure series has kept us on our toes as we've travelled through history and covered everything from the building of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt to the brutal escapades Crusades, battling the gods in Ancient Greece to the time of pillaging pirates. It's clear Ubisoft isn't running out of ideas, but the big question is, "Where are we going next?".

As of 2020, there have been 11 main entry AC games, and almost like clockwork, develops keep churning them out on this magical mystery tour of history. There's been an invigorated love for the series since Assassin's Creed Origins in 2017, and while Valhalla seems to round off the story of Layla Hassan, there's still plenty of plot points to catapult the story forward into a new era. Although we'd love to jump into a new Assassin's Creed game in 2021, it sounds like Ubisoft is going to continue delivering the Valhalla content before potentially shifting focus to a new title in 2022.

Assassin's Creed 2022: What's the rumour?

Assassin's Creed Valhalla launched late last year alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, however, it also bridges the gap between old and new by coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Gamers want to know when the first truly next-gen AC game will be hitting consoles, but be warned, there might be a bit of a wait. According to French YouTuber xj0nathan, 2021 will belong to Assassin's Creed Valhalla

In the video, he explains that Ubisoft Sofia is currently developing Assassin's Creed 2022. For those who want to know a little more, Ubisoft Sofia is the team behind Assassin's Creed Rogue - which gave the clever twist of playing as the Templar. The development team also provided some of Odyssey's DLC content, meaning it's no stranger to the world of the Brotherhood.

In the meantime, you can make the most of Valhalla's two planned expansions for 2021. Similar to how Assassin's Creed Odyssey offered a full year of DLCs expansions, the "Wrath of the Druids" and "Siege of Paris" DLCs will take Eivor to Ireland and Paris this year. There's already plenty of content available through Valhalla's Season Pass, while both the expansions can also be bought separately.

Assassin's Creed 2022: Where could we go?

Unfortunately, xj0nathan doesn't have any more details apart from these rather sketchy scraps. Still, it all sounds pretty legitimate, and it's easy to understand why Ubisoft wants to get the most out of Valhalla before putting it out to pasture. When it comes to Assassin's Creed 2022's setting, there are only wild rumours it will be set in China, with an emphasis on Ancient China. This would neatly get around criticisms that the franchise would be copying Ghost of Tsushima's beloved take on Feudal Japan.

Of course, 20220 was a busy year for Ubisoft with the release of Valhalla,  Watch Dogs: Legion and Immortals Fenyx Rising. Let's remember 2021 is already pretty packed thanks to the Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time remake, the potential release of Rainbow Six Quarantine, and the goliath that is Far Cry 6. Everyone has a lot on their plate, so it's probably for the best we wait a while before barrelling into another Assassin's Creed. At least a 2022 release date would give us a little longer to work on our stealth skills.
