Is Microsoft lighting up the Bat-Signal above Gotham City and getting ready to bring Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Knight to a whole new generation of fans? With the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S first landing in November, we've already seen a few current-gen games get a snazzy next-gen upgrade. Since its release in 2015, Arkham Knight has been heralded as a welcome addition to the Arkham family that helped round off the trilogy in style.

Aside from the release of the Batman: Arkham Collection in 2019, the series has gone quiet as Rocksteady has shifted focus to the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueArkham Collection came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, including the remastered versions of the first two games that were used in 2016's Return to Arkham. Although there was the premium edition of Arkham Knight, there wasn't a graphical upgrade. All that could be about to change.

Is an Arkham Knight upgrade coming to Xbox?

A post on Xbox Wire explains how the Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass will be changing. A banner image at the top of the post shows Arkham Knight alongside the likes of Forza: Horizon 4 and Red Dead Redemption II. What's interesting here is the fact Arkham Knight features an icon claiming it's been enhanced for Xbox Series X/S. At the time of writing, neither Microsoft nor Rocksteady have discussed the idea of as next-gen enhancement for the beloved Batman outing.

Arkham Knight is already on Xbox Game Pass, but as it stands, isn't boasting a next-gen upgrade. We should take the "leak" with a pinch of salt until someone confirms it as fact. It's entirely possible this is a simple placeholder image or an upgrade was planned at some point but didn't make the final cut. Then again, a tweak under the engine of the Batmobile is a tempting offer. Arkham Knight only runs at 900p and 30fps on Xbox One, which is a little tame given the credentials of the Xbox Series X.

The Xbox Game Pass currently has the enhanced logo for the likes of Desperados III, and given the fact this was an official Microsoft blog, the Arkham Knight news could easily be the real deal. Ahead of a proper announcement, this could be Microsoft's way of teasing the Arkham Knight upgrade for Xbox Series X. Even as more outlets continue to report the news, the Xbox Wire post still has the same image with the mythical enhanced Arkham Knight. Whether this further amps the reveal as legitimate or a fake is up for debate.

With Xbox confirming updates will allow gamers to toggle Auto HDR and FPS for certain titles, it's clear Microsoft is shifting some games into next-gen. Even though only a handful of games (including Far Cry 4 and Watch Dogs 2) have been announced, it's not outside the realms of possibility that Arkham Knight will be one of them. Timing is also nice, especially considering Kill the Justice League will be set in the same continuity as Rocksteady's games and is due to land next year. Will The Dark Knight get to spread his wings again on Xbox Series X? We're revving the engine to the Batmobile in anticipation.
