Apple has been trying to push portable gaming for some time now. Their latest Apple Arcade initiative serves as a gaming subscription for handheld titles on iOS, in an attempt to bring back some boom to the world of mobile gaming.

Apple has a clear interest in the world of video games that can fit right in your pocket - and it looks like they’re taking it a step further, and taking on the biggest gaming company in the world in the process.

What Is Apple’s New Console?

According to a recent rumour report by Wccftech, Apple could be making the plunge into the world of gaming consoles. The rumour first came from Clien, a Korean community site, that suggests the tech giant could be working on a console that could rival the Switch. It’s worth taking this rumour with a pinch of salt, but the suggestion that a new handheld gaming device could soon be on the market is an exciting one.

The console will feature a brand-new processing chip previously unused in Apple products despite their huge power, and will come with an advanced cooling system. Plus, they’re supposedly in talks with Ubisoft to bring some new games to the Apple Arcade.

It’s been a while since an outsider developer has attempted to make significant moves on the video game console market, especially one with such cultural spend as Apple. It’s incredibly bold, as taking on handheld gaming and contending with Nintendo will not be an easy task. However, after the major flop of Apple’s last console, the Pippin in 1996, it’s a chance for the company to recover their gaming credentials as well as tackling the fairly quiet current handheld market aside from the Switch.
