Apex Legends Cross-Play Beta Confirmed By Respawn For October
The time has finally come as Respawn Entertainment has confirmed when Apex Legends is entering its cross-play beta. It's been a long time coming as Respawn has kept us firmly in our PC, Xbox, and PlayStation camps. Alongside news of a Switch release, the gods above told us in June that we'd be getting cross-play. There's been plenty of speculation, but with players getting restless, a release date is on the horizon.
As more and more modern titles embrace cross-play and battle royale rivals like Fortnite make the most of sharing its player base, it was surely only a matter of time before Respawn caved to the cross-play pressure.
Posting on Twitter, the official Apex account confirmed cross-play beta is hitting the free-to-play shooter on October 6. The glossy trailer showed off the Aftermarket Collection Event and a new limited-time mode dubbed "Flashpoint", however, the big takeaway was the reveal of cross-play beta.
When it comes to Apex Legends cross-play, beta players are promised that they'll be able to play with friends and create their own party across consoles. Your friends' list will show which platform others are playing on, while in-game chat is also being adapted for cross-play. Sadly, cross-platform progression won't be supported in beta. Respawn reiterated progression is being talked about, but devs are waiting for the game's upcoming Steam launch.
Although PC and console players will be kept apart from matchmaking by default, console players can wade into the cutthroat world of PC is they want to inflict some punishment on themselves. If you aren't interested in cross-play at all, it can be disabled in the settings. Be warned though, Respawn has already foreshadowed this could lead to VERY long wait times. Only those who've disabled cross-play in their settings will be matched together, meaning there will be an extended stay in the queue.
All there's left to do now is create your own list of cross-play friends and enjoy the fun. Party invites will be distributed through the friend menu, same-platform invites will appear via the usual notification system, while cross-party invites will appear in the lobby. Now you know what to expect, let's put some cross-play pals in our crosshairs.
