Among Us Players Invent Creative Way To Adopt Abandoned Pets
One Among Us player has added a little "awww" to proceedings as they've come up with a way to adopt abandoned pets, aka orphaned kids. When you delve a little deeper into the inner workings of InnerSloth's social deduction game, Among Us is even darker than you'd think. If shapeshifting aliens popping out of a vent and murdering innocent Crewmates in cold blood wasn't harrowing enough, does anyone ever think of the kids left behind?
One of Among Us' many features is the ability to adopt a cosmetic pet, which is basically a tiny Crewmate to follow you around. If you're one of the unlucky ones who is offed by an Imposter, your pet will sit and mourn - effectively littering the ship with a bunch of crying children that are pining for mummy or daddy. While the ship sometimes looks like a murderous orphanage, someone has come with an inventive way to combat this.
Can you adopt an orphan in Among Us?
Posting on Reddit, Unity developer Ahmad Creations showcased their video for an impressive "adopt" mechanic. To achieve this, Ahmad Creations added custom art and coding to a partial remake of Among Us, which was made with the Unity engine. In the short video, we see an abandoned troupe of pets being adopted and hopefully finding a new and inviting home away from the murderous depths of outer space.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Ahmad Creations explained how and why they created the adopt function. When discussing how long it took to make, they said, "Around three days in total - I'm still new to making art and editing videos in general so I hope I'll cut my time in the future.
"I've been a Unity game developer for the last five years and I'm currently going into YouTube... I needed something unique and trendy to start with so I made the adoption thingy".
Could InnerSloth add adoption to Among Us?
There's been a lot of debate about where Among Us could go next. The three-person development team at InnerSloth recently nixed plans for Among Us 2 and vowed to continue work on the original game. Given that the OG found recent fame some two years after it was released, it makes sense that the developers want to milk it for all it's worth. They originally said adding elements they wanted for Among Us 2 into the original would be too hard, but we'll have to wait and see.
As it stands, players have already been warned custom maps won't be coming to Among Us. The assets apparently just don't exist, meaning it would be a case of going back, drawing each individual element, and adding it in. In terms of the ability to adopt abandoned pets, it's also unlikely. The cosmetic pets aren't included in the base game (costing £2.31/$2.99), so probably won't get their own function. That being said, Ahmad Creations' video shows how it could be done relatively easily, so who knows.
Remember though, a pet is for life, not just for Christmas!
