It was thought that Warzone would have dominion over Twitch forever. The battle royale game has been one of the platform’s most consistent titles, lording over every other Call of Duty title in numbers for as long as any player can remember. In many ways, it’s kept the game going at a time where interest in Black Ops Cold War has severely dropped off for Twitch viewers, and has allowed for the franchise to make a bold comeback.

But, as a pretty big surprise, a newcomer has swept up Twitch audiences to such a degree that it’s left many other games in the dust. Warzone included.

New World, the new MMO from Amazon Games Studio opened its closed beta tests yesterday, and apparently it’s drawn a lot of interest in that one 24-hour period. So many people were viewing the game yesterday that it dominated the site’s front page, beating out not only Warzone for viewers, but also GTA V and the domineering Just Chatting category.

The playtests reached over 650,000 concurrent viewers at one point yesterday, and hovered at the top of the categories tab for most of the day. The game dominated, quite frankly, and it’s come as a shock to many fans.

But what is this mysterious game that’s seemingly leapt out of nowhere?

New World is a mystical MMO set on the island of Aeternum, a place that flows with magic, dread and death. In the game, the player will explore the island, discovering all it has to offer including Azoth, the strange substance that seems to gift magic to the island’s inhabitants. New World looks to be a game that emphasises exploration and choice, letting you pick your own factions and allegiances - and apparently, Twitch seems to be impressed so far.

If you wanted a look into a game that could well be the next big thing - it’s all waiting for you on Twitch. And who knows, if you’re clued in enough you might be able to get into the next closed beta.
