Among Us Airship Map Officially Gets March Release Date

InnerSloth is taking flight with Among Us, as the indie developer is finally bringing the long-awaited Airship map to the chart-topping game. While we've always known Among Us was going to be entering a new era in 2021, players have been left on tenterhooks about exactly when that would be. Last year was massive for the game, as Among Us soared to the top of Twitch and was played by everyone from Felix "xQc", Imane "Pokimane" Anys, and even politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
At the moment, there are only three maps in Among Us, with Polus releasing all the way back in November 2019. InnerSloth originally had plans to move forward with Among Us 2, but as the game soared in 2020, the tiny team decided to scrap that and make the most of the original. Although we're promised some of the planned features will be amalgamated into Among Us, the base game will stay largely the same. If you're sick of the same three maps, there's good news that a fourth is on the way.
What is the Among Us Airship map?
In a release statement, InnerSloth announced its biggest map yet that will include an account system for moderation, a new platform travel system, ladders, and (most excitingly) the “ability to pick the room you start in". There's also the cosmetic addition of a few new hats, but we always knew they'd be coming with the massive update. The dev team went on to explain why it's been so long since the announcement of Airship to its upcoming release. It turns out lots of meetings and hirings led to an extended wait between Polus and Airship.
In the post, the devs said, "I explained this a bit in our last dev log, but Among Us’ popularity was something no one expected, and quite late into 2020 too. We had already considered the game done and had moved onto something else". Creating Airship took longer than expected because the devs had to give up on Among Us 2 and shift focus back to the OG. The post continued, "Additionally, creating a map and updates isn’t as simple as creating one aspect of the game and throwing it onto the PC.
"Because our game is cross-platform, it means EVERYTHING needs to work on as many devices as possible. You may have noticed most modifications to the game focus on just PC, as that makes development much easier."
When is the Among Us Airship map coming?
If you can't wait to soar in Airship, you'll be pleased to know it's landing as part of a huge update on March 31. We also know Airship is a homage to InnerSloth's Henry Stickman Collection series, which explains the slightly different art style. With so much new content and new tasks, we can't wait to get behind the controls of this flying machine.
Of course, the new map isn't the only overhaul the devs have introduced. Finally, InnerSloth concluded that it makes sense to launch Airship alongside the new moderation system on March 31: "It would be wrong to launch the new map, get all hyped, and pretend like there were no issues with toxicity So these two things needed to launch together."
With an Xbox port also on the way later this year, InnerSloth is doing everything it can to justify why cancelling Among Us 2 in favour of focussing on the first game was a good idea. While some think Among Us has already peaked, there's no escaping its popularity. With the first big update in years, adding Airship to Among Us means there's sure to be an uptick in the number of players.
