We're suiting up in spandex, as yet another Marvel game is apparently on the way. If Insomniac's Spider-Man games, Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers, and Firaxi's Midnight Suns weren't enough, what about a Marvel MMORPG where you can play as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, or X-Men?

Marvel games are nothing new, and over the years we've had some highs and lows. With the continued success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are no signs of our Marvel hype dying down. Now, there could be a crossover for the ages that combines our love of Marvel Comics with our love of massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

What Is The Marvel MMORPG?

According to multiple sources, the team behind DC Universe Online could be working on the Marvel MMORPG. Eurogamer notes that Enad Global 7 has released its Q3 2021 financial report, which contained a subtle mention that Daybreak and Dimensional Ink are developing a new AAA MMO that will be "utilizing Marvel IP."

Daybreak is known for its work on DC Universe Online - gathering the likes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. DC Universe Online first came out in 2011, but with regular content drops, August's "House of Legends" is the 41st episodic update.

The Marvel MMORPG will apparently be headed up by Jack Emmert, who is the man in charge of DC Universe Online, previously ran City of Heroes, and co-founded Cryptic Studios.

When Will We Know More About The Marvel MMORPG?

We're in an exciting time for Marvel games. Away from Midnight Suns, we know Insomniac is working on Spider-Man 2 AND Wolverine game. As for the untitled Marvel MMORPG, Enad Global 7 has listed it as a long-term project beyond 2022. We'd guess 2023 or maybe 2024 for this one.

This actually isn't the first we've heard of Daybreak working on a Marvel MMORPG. The idea was originally floated in 2018, but the studio was hit by a series of layoffs.

Cryptic also worked on Marvel Universe Online in 2006, which was cancelled by Microsoft in 2008 and rebranded as Cryptic's Champions Online.

MMORPGs are still big business, with the likes of The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, and World of Warcraft being some of 2021's best examples. Combining the comic book chaos of Marvel with the community spirit of an MMORPG sounds like a licence to print money.
