Players can live out their childhood fantasies in Hogwarts Legacy, and can fly the grounds of Hogwarts on a broomstick - but you'll need to know how you can get one to start zipping high above the gorgeous landscape.

This is because broomstick flight isn't available right from the off, so you'll need to play a little way through the game before you can pick your personal levitation method of choice.

How to fly with your broom

To ride your broom in Hogwarts Legacy, press L1 (LB on Xbox/Tab + 3 on PC / L on Switch) to bring up the rotary wheel menu.

  • You'll spot a separate menu with your available mounts with their controls to access them underneath. While in the rotary menu, press Circle (B on Xbox / Q on PC / A on Switch)
  • You'll then be taken out of the menu and immediately hop on top of your broom to freely fly about Hogwarts and enjoy the sights as you wish

Once you have your broom, you'll be able to travel all across the school grounds and surrounding Hamlets. You cannot fly in or out of Hogsmeade or Hogwarts Castle itself, however, so remember to practise your dismount!

When do you get a broom?

You'll first get the option to ride a broom via the first Flying Class at the school grounds, which takes place around 2-3 hours into Hogwarts Legacy.

The quest in question is called the 'Jackdaw's Rest' mission in the main story. If you haven't come across it yet, simply keep playing through the main quests that Hogwarts Legacy gives you and you'll eventually reach it.

Where can you get other brooms?

Once you've unlocked your first broom, if you also want to pick up something different to the one you started with, you can buy new ones at Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade. This can be found near the southern entrance to Hogsmeade, as shown on the map above.

This is what the shop looks like from the outside:

These are all the brooms you can purchase from the shop:

  • Wind Wisp Broom
  • Ember Dash Broom
  • Hogwarts House Broom
  • Moon Trimmer Broom
  • Yew Weaver Broom

There are also travelling vendors that you can purchase new brooms from, so keep an eye out for NPCs looking to sell you things while on your travels.

You should also be on the lookout for broom challenges while traversing the world of Hogwarts Legacy. If you see a collection of Balloons in the sky, fly through them to pop them. There should be five in each area, so look around to make sure you pop all of them in a given space.

Popping all 32 Balloon Clusters in the game will earn you access to these four brooms:

  • Night Dancer Broom
  • Lickety Swift Broom
  • Wild Fire Broom
  • Bright Spark Broom
