While the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be sleeping on the X-Men's right now, a different corner of this world is honouring them in style. X-Men '97 picks up the baton of the acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series and has us questioning why it's taken 27 years to bring them back.

We've already seen X-Men '97 honour Konami's X-Men arcade game, and now, video games are returning the favour. Microsoft has created its own X-Men '97-inspired Xbox and series of controllers, and safe to say, it's a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, it comes with a major drawback that's left us angrier than a disgruntled Wolverine.

Microsoft has just announced the special edition X-Men '97 Xbox, coming with a comic book-esque wrap of the team in action that's designed by Marvel's Rich Douek and Paco Diaz. The two-page spread is exclusive to the Xbox Series X and shows Cyclops and the rest of the team taking on the Sentinels and Master Mold in the Danger Room.

That's not all, as Xbox Design Lab has created a series of controllers that bring your favourite members of the team to life. The colourways include Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Morph, Magneto, Jubilee, Gambit, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Beast, and Bishop. Each has a '90s blister pack and is described as the "ultimate collector item."

Those who enter the typical sweepstakes have a chance of winning the Xbox and one of the Wolverine controllers. You have to follow Xbox on X (formerly Twitter) and retweet the official Xbox sweepstakes tweet under #Xbox97Sweepstakes before Sunday, May 19, 8PM PST/11PM EST/3AM (May 20) BST.

With the X-Men '97 collab being limited to a sweepstake competition, fans are rightly fuming. Given that our limited edition Xboxes are pretty 'limited', the comments make it clear we'd be willing to shell out a fortune for the X-Men Xbox.

One fumed, "Da F why aren't these systems just available in stores. The Xbox One and 360 had so many special Editions you could buy why does the Series X only have the Halo one?" Another raged, "Why do they keep doing these awesome Xbox consoles through sweepstakes? Just sell them."

Someone else joked, "'Hey let’s show off some very cool controllers but not sell them' Everyone- 'LET ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY!!'" Although someone pointed out how you can make the Design Lab controllers yourselves, it still doesn't come with the cool blister packs. Oh well, another day, another missed opportunity for Microsoft to make bank.
