Void Sols is a Geometry Wars-inspired Soulslike and it looks incredible
The Soulslike has created its own kind of dominion over the gaming industry. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls did wonders for players who wanted something with a bit of extra flavour in their gaming experiences, and now that FromSoftware has asserted its dominance with Elden Ring, players are staking their claim with their abilities.
It's almost as though the Soulslike has become the benchmark for what a "real gamer" can manage, even though the term doesn't make us full-body cringe, and players who are a bit too into themselves use their completion of various gnarly titles to prove their worth. But it looks like there's some extra challenge to come for those who really want to test their mettle.
Modern Wolf reveals Void Sols, the geometric Soulslike
UK publisher Modern Wolf has just unveiled a game that could shake up our expectations of Soulslike games forever - a brand-new brute of a game that takes place in a geometrical world.
Void Sols is a game created by US-based indie team Finite Reflections, and it strips the Soulslike subgenre down to its most basic elements in a top-down fighter that aims to offer the ultimate challenge. You'll play as a triangular combatant facing off against other shapes with parries, dodges and blocks galore, helping you in "crafting the ultimate triangle, and exploring a world rich in interwoven lore."
The game aims to be a title that players can dive in and out of with abandon, and get its hooks in players with plenty of flexibility in the difficulty department. It's a fascinating and bizarre project, but with its structure and aesthetic, it could come to recontextualise what a Soulslike actually is.
Void Sols is aiming for a 2025 release
If you want to get your hands on the game that could practically rebuild your idea of the Soulslike genre at large, there may be some wait to endure first. Modern Wolf has revealed that Void Sols is aiming for a release in the fourth quarter of 2024, but "more likely Q1 2025."
Void Sols looks like a blast that extends far beyond what geometric titles can typically offer, so we're willing to bet it'll be worth the wait. To be honest, it'll probably beat our tenth playthrough of Bloodborne.
