The Pokemon anime is taking us on a trip down memory lane, as we say goodbye to some very special friends.

Ash and Pikachu's time as the Pokemon franchise's frontmen are over, and as the series gears up to introduce two new protagonists, we've been granted the current series. This means Pokemon: Aim to Be a Pokemon Master will be one final farewell to the duo.

It's incredibly sad to see the dynamic duo go after a whopping 26 years on-screen together, but times must change, and it seems Ash himself knows it.

Ash and Pikachu's final series is a real nostalgia trip to compensate for their loss. In the latest episode, it has just brought him together with one of his oldest Pokemon.

Ash And Squirtle Have Been Reunited

The latest episode of Pokemon: Aim to Be a Pokemon Master has finally reunited Ash with his iconic Squirtle, who he befriended during his time in the Squirtle Squad.

The new episode is called "Burn! The Zenigame Fire Brigade!!" in Japan, where Ash, Misty, and Brock find an ad for a performance by the Squirtle Squad.

It turns out that they're performing in a Super-Sentai show rather than fighting fires, and it is later revealed that Team Rocket is behind the show in a bid to take advantage of the Squirtle.

As Ash and the gang patch up the problem and get the team back to fighting fires as they're needed, Ash and his Squirtle finally get their moment together. Better yet, it beautifully reflects the first time Squirtle joins the team in the first series.

The similarities between their meetings has been pointed out in a video shared on Twitter by user Dracovish, and it's pretty lovely to see. But this isn't the first time that Ash has met an old friend recently.

Ash and Butterfree Reunite In Pokemon Journeys

It's not just Squirtle getting all the love, as Ash has also been lucky enough to see his Butterfree, who he set free earlier in the series.

The Butterfree returned to Ash in Pokemon Journeys, along with his Butterfree lady friend, after appearing to Ash in a couple of visions. Alongside Misty and Psyduck, there's been Brock and Cilan, as well a tease of Oshawott.

That's all well and good, but the big ones are the imminent return of Ash's Charizard and Bulbasaur. There will surely be tears when his OG starter trio is back together. It's nice to see Ash see some old friends before he finally bids farewell to the series at large.
