As a series, Borderlands has had the spin-off treatment incredibly often, especially considering the relatively short amount of time it's been around. Since the first game launched in 2009, we've had sequels, pre-sequels, spin-offs, and off-shoots that culminated with this year's Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.

Now, Borderlands has the opportunity to go truly anywhere from here. The series has always been creative and a little bit bonkers, so there's unlimited potential for the next title. As it turns out, though, it looks like we'll be returning to a fan-favourite entry... but there's a catch.

What Is The Tales From The Borderlands Sequel?

Gearbox has officially announced that it is developing a sequel to the brilliantly written Telltale title, Tales From The Borderlands. It's much to the delight of fans, who expected the series to be dead in the water after the fallout of Telltale Games.

Near the end of Gearbox's showcase at PAX East, company CEO Randy Pitchford came out on stage to reveal that a new Tales From The Borderlands is in the works, and will be coming this year. It'll be published by 2K Games, but that's not all. Because it looks like Rhys and Fiona won't be making an appearance.

Tales From The Borderlands 2 Will Feature All-New Characters

Rather than make a return to the story that 2014's episodic comedy established, the Tales From The Borderlands sequel will be an all-new story with a fresh cast of characters. Still, we'd expect the odd cameo from some familiar faces.

This is a surprising reveal, but an all-new story could be exactly what the series needs to give it a bit more love. After all, the first game came out eight years ago, and if the time has come to tell a new story, then the Tales moniker is a great way to get fans through the door.

Fans are incredibly excited to see what's next from the series, especially as Telltale isn't attached - but we'll just have to wait to see how it turns out. Tales From The Borderlands is back, and not a moment too soon.
