Grand Theft Auto has occupied a strange space of mislaid hype for some time now. Fans have waited patiently for years about the announcement of whatever is next for the franchise, and the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy came and went with a sigh.

Fans deserved much better than what they got in the trilogy, and many have been waiting so long with so much pent up hype that frankly, the GTA Online updates simply haven't cut it.

But, after many years, we've got incredible news. We've wondered for ages, but now we've got confirmation - the next Grand Theft Auto game is finally in development. Pinch us.

In a very surprising manner, it has finally been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games that the next game in the Grand Theft Auto series is in development.

Hidden at the very bottom of a community update on the Rockstar Games website, Rockstar officially confirmed what fans have been expecting for some time.

"With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," the post reads. "With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details."

This is huge news, but Rockstar seems to know that even posting the reveal at the bottom of an inconspicuous blog post will garner massive hype. They're incredibly right, and we can't wait to see what the next GTA has in store for us. Either way, GTA 6 is finally coming, and the fact that it's "well underway" is immensely exciting.

As of right now, there's no release window to speak of, but we can probably expect that the game is still at least a couple of years off in terms of announcements. We may be itching for the game to come out much sooner, but after all, Grand Theft Auto games are massive, and as such, need a lot of time in the oven.

It may come off as ironic, but this could genuinely be one of the biggest games ever made, and the very fact that it has been revealed at the bottom of a community update is hilariously Rockstar. No matter - we know it's on the way. What an absolute dream, eh?
