It's fair to say Battlefield 2042 has had a rough month. The launch of the latest came was met with fury, as the title didn't nearly meet expectations laid out by DICE's plans or any of the game's promotional materials.

Battlefield 2042 has turned out buggy and easy to exploit, and that's even discounting the fact that it doesn't look the way we'd come to expect it to. Plus, as they've been forced to rescind their controversial Santa skin, they devs are in hot water with the FPS community.

But, it looks like they're taking a completely different approach to their next game to make up for it - and it's going to be truly hit-or-miss for a lot of fans.

The Next Battlefield Could Be An Overwatch Clone

Popular leaker Tom Henderson has brought up a peculiar rumour that suggests Battlefield will be leaning much more into the hero-shooter subgenre.

"The next Battlefield title is scoped as a hero shooter of sorts", he says on Twitter. "It's not a removal of specialists, but an enhancement of them. #Battlefield2042 has always been intended to be a stepping stone to a "hero shooter" with a Battle Royale - it was just executed poorly."

It'll be interesting to see how Battlefield approaches the style popularised by Overwatch and VALORANT - especially as the change will, for the gaming community at least, be a result of 2042's failures. But can it actually work?

Could A Battlefield Hero Shooter Be Successful?

The short answer is yes, there's every chance that the franchise could effectively tackle the subgenre but the debate when it comes to Battlefield's ability to make a hero shooter is how good it can be.

EA and DICE will have to seriously focus up in order to make a Battlefield game work in a different subgenre, especially if they're intent on maintaining the rest of the franchise's staples.

It would be a deeply fascinating turn for the franchise to take, but frankly, it's going to need some serious distance from 2042 - making this move a wise one.

We'll have to wait and see to take a peek at what Battlefield has in store for us next - but as long as there's no Bastion-grade imbalance, we'll be happy.
