In the two decades of Call of Duty action, we've been whisked around the globe and to plenty of fantastical places. We've long moved on from the beaches of Normandy, reached for the Moon, and come back down to Earth in 2187 America.

So, with Iraq, Afghanistan, and more set to be focal points for the rumoured Black Ops Gulf War's supposed open-world campaign - or not, if recent Xbox hints are to be believed - where is next?

Call of Duty fans already have one place they want to see come next, and it's the setting that we nearly got 10 years ago.

Call of Duty fans eye a Vietnam campaign

In a post titled "Which War would you want to (re)visit" on the Call of Duty subreddit, one answer was repeatedly thrown out. "Vietnam War".

"A proper Vietnam war game would be great," one comment read. "Black Ops as a franchise has a penchant for slotting us into real-life situations to serve their fictional spy-thriller stories and the first Black Ops and Cold War were pretty egregious at this in Vietnam."

A second added, "I want to see the Vietnam War, I don’t mean the Cold War I mean the Vietnam War. Vietnam always feels like just a backdrop in Cold War games. But no I want a game fully dedicated to the Vietnam War."

A third of the comments all listed Vietnam in one way or another, while the more obvious WWII flanked other proxies like Korea and Falklands.

Will we ever get a Vietnam-based Call of Duty?

Well, Call of Duty already has a Vietnam-based game sat in its archives, as Sledgehammer Games once developed the title with the first 15-minutes being fully playable back in 2010-11.

Sledgehammer's project wouldn't have been your usual CoD experience, though. It would've been a third-person action-adventure game that wouldn't have tied into multiplayer - hence why it was soon shelved as the studio was moved to Infinity Ward's side to help with the original Modern Warfare 3.

Many CoD fans have been calling for this game to come back out, and it could even tie into Sledgehammer's Vanguard series if it ever moved forward with a sequel.

Alternatively, Black Ops could eventually take us to Vietnam, having already developed a handful of missions in the country in BO1. It might not be too much of a stretch for Treyarch to spin out a full game in that manner.
