Last night was a big night for press conferences. Not only did we get a State of Play presentation spotlighting some indie titles, but also EA Play Live, which offered insight into a myriad of existing EA games - including Battlefield 2042.

The game is set to make a big splash on launch and has the potential to shake up the first-person shooter for the next generation of consoles, but many fans were concerned as to whether the game would have a battle royale-style mode.

Some are hoping for a BR mode and others are dreading one, but either way, the game’s developers offered fans an update on their battle royale - and it looks… different.

Also whilst you're here, make sure you check out everything we know about the next instalment of the Call of Duty Franchise, CoD: Vanguard, including release dates, leaks and more!

The intriguing thing about the (now confirmed) battle royale mode for Battlefield 2042 is the reluctance from developers to call it a battle royale mode. It was referred to by the General Manager of DICE Oskar Gabrielson as a “high stakes, squad-based game mode”, and has been suggested to be quite different from the traditional experience of the mode.

The new gameplay addition, officially titled Hazard Zone, is “not your classic battle royale” according to Gabrielson. “It’s a really contemporary mode. It’s also something the team has been thinking about for many years - we’re really looking forward to showing it to the world. It has some really special components, and it really kind of leans into the superpowers of Battlefield and DICE at the same time.”

Gabrielson didn’t show anything off to do with the mode, but promised a new look at it this Autumn before the game’s launch.

The mode sounds intriguing, and we’re looking forward to finding out more about it. The use of the word “contemporary” implies that it’ll be more in keeping with the Battlefield gameplay we’re used to, but either way - a battle royale is a battle royale.
